The moment you open your eyes in the morning is already a blessing given by God. The opportunity to spend another day with the people you love is something that we should be thankful for. There should have an attitude of thanksgiving in both the trials and blessings of life as this distinguishes what it is to be a  Christian. The prayer of thanksgiving is very important in everyone’s lives, for we need hope in all seasons.

Blessings can not be counted as there are some things that we are not aware of. Sometimes, we are aware that God blessed us making us too overwhelmed to even remember to thank Him. There are various verses about thankfulness in the Bible that tell us about thankfulness and gratitude; and here are the best known 25!

Commands To Always Be Thankful

The Bible has spoken a lot about thanking God for everything and how He commands His people to carry a thankful heart every breathing moment. Being thankful will not only please God, but it also affects our perspective on our current situation, be it good or bad. Also, when we pray and give thanks to God in good and bad situations, we are promised to be given grace and faith.

1 Chronicles 16:8

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Colossians 4:2

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Psalms 100:4

Hebrews 13:15

By him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

How Should We Thank God?

Thanking God shouldn’t be taken as something that we should accomplish like a day-to-day task. We need to learn how to be naturally thankful and make it a habit; not only to God but also to people God sent to bless us, no matter how big or small the favor we were given. With everything we do, we should always give thanks to the Lord. The bible verses about thankfulness will guide us on how we should offer our thanks to God.

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Psalms 26:7

That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

Rewards For Being Thankful

One of the famous stories in the Bible was when Jesus fed thousands of people with only 2 small fishes and 5 loaves. Aside from the miracle that happened, we should not ignore other lessons that this story teaches us. Despite the little amount of food that they have, Jesus lifted those to the Father and nevertheless thanked Him for it. This is to prove that miracles happen when we are thankful and appreciative of the things given to us instead of complaining about what we do not have. Also, be thankful in all things because He will never fail us.

Matthew 26:27

Dangers Of Being Unthankful

There are also consequences for having an unthankful heart, however. God does not command us to thank Him, but He gives us a choice to be thankful. Alongside the bible verses of thankfulness, the bible has also given us warnings about the consequences of being consistently ungrateful (Phillipians 2:14 -18). This consequence explained by the Apostle Paul is not of literal death, but worse. It is the death of your spiritual growth and it hurts your walk with God.

Ecclesiasticus 29:17

And he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him in danger that delivered him.

Romans 1:21

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Things To Be Thankful For

There are many things to be thankful for in our lives. For example, we have families, friends, homes, and a spiritual community that cares about each believer and nonbeliever. One of the greatest things we should be thankful for is the love of Christ, given to us freely. Here are some bible verses about thankfulness that show what we should be thankful for.

And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.

Daniel 2:23

To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king’s matter.”

Philippians 4:10

But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.

Most people today carry an unthankful heart as most believe that everything they have is the product of solely their deeds. They don’t realize that without the gifts of God, nothing would be possible for them. God has given us things that we don’t even know of. Try to think of all the things you did today. Did you get home safe? Thank God!  Did you have food to eat? Thank God! Did you have a fun time out with your family or friends? Thank God! There are endless reasons why we should thank God, especially for the blessings that He gives us each day.
