Document: /pub/resources/software/mac/critext: 00Please_read_me_first.txt --------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to CRI TEXT version 2.5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- "When we need information fast, there are basically two resources that we use. The first is our vertical files and the second is CRI TEXT. We (myself and all the other research staff) use it on average several times a day and find it an extremely valuable tool." -- Stuart Chevre, Spiritual Counterfeits Project ---------------------- This "read me" document is part of the "CRI TEXT" freeware package (Macintosh version; release 2.5; January 18, 1994) which contains: Main Package The CRI Apologetics Index (for the following periodicals): Areopagus The Christian Research Newsletter The Christian Research Journal The LodeStar Review The PFO Newsletter / Quarterly Journal The Spiritual Counterfeits Newsletter The Spiritual Counterfeits Journal Update Journal on New Religious Movements In addition, the full text is included for: CRI's BBS-FYI Research Bulletin, Volume 1, 1993 CRI's FYI Research Bulletin, Volume 1, 1985 -- Volume 9, 1993 Separate, non-database files included: CRI's introductory brochure CRI's Resource Listing (catalog of literature and tapes offered) CRI's "Bible Answer Man" nationwide radio show station listing/log The article, "Computer Technology and the Defense of the Gospel" For many CRI's BBS-FYI Research Bulletin will be something new. Until recently I had planned to regularly update a paper I wrote in 1991 titled "Computer Technology and the Defense of the Gospel." Although I still include it in semi-updated form as a separate file within the CRI TEXT software package, I couldn't update it as much as I wanted. That ambition became impractical. The rate of growth of information eclipsed the possibility of doing updates in any efficient maner. Like the FYI, the BBS-FYI began as tool to distribute current information to our research staff; this time related to computers and apologetics. The purpose of the BBS-FYI is to report on the influence of non-Christian religious elements within the world of computer technology for those interested in Christian apologetics. In addition, secular and Christian computer resources that are of general value to apologists are also noted. This release of CRI TEXT includes the first 20 issues of the BBS-FYI (over 56,000 words). The files in the "Main Package" above are combined in one large linear document for use with the HyperCard retrieval engine provided -- "Free Text," a non-CRI freeware product. These resources are also packaged individually and solely for your convienience but are not necessarily intended for use with Free Text. Applications such as common word processors may be used to access them. (Note to previous CRI TEXT users -- this is the same (unchanged) version of Free Text as that used in release 2.1 of CRI TEXT.) All of the above text files are archived on these disks with a file compression utility named "Compact Pro." The files are self-opening. The larger files are also segmented into two parts so that the package will also fit on low-density disks if necessary.* You will need about five megabytes of hard disk space (not including the individual files) on which to place the opened archives and servant index files that Free Text must create for itself. (Suggestion: Save precious hard disk space and omit opening/decompressing the "individual files" for now.) * -- Not knowing if this update would fit on two high-density disks I asked for three megabytes of blank media in the advertising for this release. Since the whole 2.5 update DID fit on just two disks (with little to spare), I end up with spare disks. I will be keeping them. If this is a problem please let me know and I will gladly return the equivalent extra blank disks that I didn't use. (I can not guarantee you will get the same disks back that you sent us in the first place.) H O W T O G E T S T A R T E D 1) Turn on your printer and run off a copy of what you are now reading. 2) Double-click on the "CRI TEXT 2.5.sea.#1" file in the first CRI TEXT diskette. (Again, save precious hard disk space and omit opening the "individual files" for now. They are just convienience/bonus items.) 3) Follow the instructions on your screen to put the decompressed contents of the CRI TEXT diskettes onto your hard disk. Once the first segment is done you will be prompted for the second segment. Eject the first disk if that second segment is not available on it and load the next disk in the package sequence. 4) Launch the "Free Text Help/Services" HyperCard stack and explore its contents. 5) Click the small "Build Index" button at the lower right of the card that appears on the screen. (Note: I'm not referring to the similarly named bar in the main part of the card.) 6) Select and open the "CRI Apologetics Index" file that you just installed on your hard disk earlier. This indexing will take a while and result in two similarly named files in your folder (a ".k" and ".p" attached to the ends). Do the same with the much larger "CRI TEXT 2.5" file. (The larger file takes over 25 minutes to be indexed with a stock Mac Classic.) 7) Open the "Free Text Browser" stack. (You will need HyperCard 2.0 or later.) 8) Click on the small open book-like icon at the top of the screen just to the right of center. 9) Open either the "CRI TEXT 2.5" file. (Don't try to open a file with the special .k or .p ending.) 10) That's it. You are on your way. Enjoy the learning experience. Use the Help stack for more information. Thank you for your interest in the ministry Christian Research Institute. We hope you find CRI TEXT helpful.
