What follows is a little fable: yes, and a meaningful one. All that's of interest in my little column this day is contained in three words, which you will come to know, which express my opinion of the new president of the United States. You won't find anything beyond these in my column today... The fable: One day, four dogs were talking. One dog was Cuban, another African, a third was Mexican, and the last American. Said the Mexican dog, "Sometimes at night I feel hungry, but when the family comes home, I bark and they give me dinner." The Cuban dog asked: "What is `bark'?" The African dog asked: "What is dinner?" And then the American dog asked: "What is family?" The fable, like all fables and those who write them, is simplistic and perhaps generalizes unjustly. Not all ants are workers, and not all cicadas are lazy. There must be ants like me and cicadas who aren't. But...the moral serves me as a three word manifestation of the opinion I've formed of the president of the United States, William Clinton (WC), after his first day in Government. Here's the opinion, expressed in the most diplomatic term possible: "He's a `calamity.'" [See translator's note at the end.] In effect, each vote he received in order to win the election over Bush, he's going to pay for by killing a child. No sooner did he rise to power than he paid his debt to the abortionists. He opened the doors on abortion in such a way that it is now more difficult in the United States to kill a cockroach than to take the life of a human person with his own individual and distinct existence -- as a child in the womb of his mother. What Clinton has now legalized without a single hesitation or limitation is the assassination of innocent human beings. Why did he do this? Because he represents a new generation of Americans born after the second World War, fruit of an arrogant and hedonistic society, whose values can be summarized as commodiousness, economic success and the deprecation of all which doesn't serve to satisfy their egotism or obscene well-being. How is it possible that the leader of the United States proclaims himself a champion of human rights and doesn't respect the most elemental of these rights, which is the right to life? What kind of hypocritical society is it which cries and gets indignant over the accidental death of a dolphin and then applauds the legal and methodical assassination of a human creature? We can soon see what significance this attitude of Clinton's could have in relation to Mexico. Lately...we've come to depend on the gringos for everything, to submit our destiny to theirs. The model of American life seems beyond all imagining; we hope to imitate it. For this reason we won't be long in hearing voices begging us to "modernize" as well, like the yankees: "If we want to be First World, we too must kill children, just like them." Well and rightly did the Catholic Church act -- the Church which so often commits grave sins against "prudence" -- in having energetically and without hesitation condemned the barbarous dispositions of the new president of the United States. Let's prepare ourselves to see in the Clinton era a new nation in which many of the traditional values of the American people will be absent; among them concern for the family... "What is family?" he will ask -- like the dog in the fable -- that frivolous yuppie cloaked in power. [Note: it's nearly impossible to translate the word the author uses: "ca'on." This is a superlative of "ca'os," or "chaos." Strictly speaking, it's not a word, but it's typically Mexican to emphasize a word in this fashion. At any rate, to call someone chaos in the Mexican slang is about the worst thing one could say -- it's a person in total disarray, beneath respect. To use the superlative form (and to say that this is diplomatic) is...not complimentary.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) On the National Front (US) *New Jersey*: N.J. Supreme Court was asked to balance free-speech rights against the rights of abortionists, and those of women who seek abortions. Protestors opposing abortion maintain that court injunctions requiring them to keep their distance violate their right to free speech and peaceful assembly. The cases under review are believed to be the first to reach a state supreme court. Two interesting points were brought out in the oral arguments: a lawyer for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America said the 'intimidation' tactics in front of the abortionists' homes were working. (Two of the cases involve injunctions to not protest in front of abortionists' homes.) Also, a volunteer lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union spoke _against_ the limits on picketing. Frank Carrotta presented how the ACLU strongly supports legalized abortion, but the court should not set limits on the First Amendment. He said the First Amendment takes precedence even when intimidation is a goal, as long as protestors do not make threats. *Massachusetts*: Pro-Abortion Governor William Weld recently signed a bill into law that will make abortion clinic blockades a crime in Massachusetts. The bill would permit jail sentences of up to six months in prison for first-time violators, and up to 2 1/2 years and a $5,000 fine for subsequent offenses. The law also allows clinics to sue opponents for disrupting their business. Currently, most people who blockade abortuaries are charged with misdemeanor crimes, such as ingnoring an order to disperse, creating a public nuisance, blocking public access, etc.. *California*: U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders commented at Planned Parenthood's National Conference that 57 percent of the children born in America are, "unplanned and unwanted." Echoing her avid support for condom distribution and abortion-on-demand, Elders commented how women should have control of their fertility to assure that every child in America is planned and wanted. [One wonders if she would rather insist that women _control_ their fertility to _assure_ that every child is planned and wanted. Ed.] *Pennsylvania*: A Chester County judge allowed a pro-life activist Patricia Lyons to picket a department store in a local mall. Judge M.J. Melody dismissed the case without listening to the arguments of either counsel. As a result, Lyons can continue to picket outside Strawbridge and Clothier's, protesting its support of Planned Parenthood. Although U.S. and state Supreme Court cases have held that mall owners can bar political protests at malls, Judge Melody evidently saw this as other than Lyons' protest as other than political. *Minnesota*: The MEA (MN Education Assoc), for the first time in 20+ years, barred MCCL (MN Citizen's Concerned for Life) from attending the MEA convention this year. The reason given was that the pro-life organization doesn't have the same reproductive rights stance as the MEA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) The Right to Write Hoechst AG, the parent company of Roussel-Uclaf, the manufacturer of the infamous RU-486 killer steroid, is reluctant to court pro-life outrage by marketing this drug in the US. The interesting connection with the breast cancer issue is that RU-486 chemically induces a miscarriage and has all the bad effects for breast cancer risk of surgical abortions, with additional hormonal effects (whether good or bad I cannot say) from the drug itself. If the present and potential future manufacturers of abortifacient drugs can be alerted about the possibility that their products may cause breast cancer, or substantially increase the risk, it might influence them not to market these wares. (Deep-pocketed companies are always terrified of large population class-action lawsuits) and perhaps encourage them to get out of the business altogether. To make such letters really effective, there are three important things to do: a) Identify all the pharmaceutical companies that now produce such drugs or are planning to produce them, and determining the names of the people who make broad policy decisions for these companies (who to write). b) Assemble a packet of compelling material - mostly reprints/copies of research articles (what to send). [annotated bibliographies are good too. Ed.] c) Sending this material together with a well-written discussion of the potential legal implications of the breast-cancer connection, if it is conclusively demonstrated to be true. (Argue the point) If anyone is interested in pursuing letters of this nature, please contact me. - Sam Conner ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Announcements *Massachusetts Citizens for Life & Ivy League Coalition for Life Convention* The Ivy League Colaition for Life will be holding their fall convention at Harvard on Saturday, November 13. This article includes an excellent bibliography. A must for understanding this deadly side-effect of abortion. By Scott Somerville [ Ask for "BeforeYouChoose" ] "The Deadly After-Effect of Abortion" This is a short pamphlet-length presentation describing the risk of breast cancer due to abortion. An good summary of the presentation given in _Before You Choose_. [ Ask for "DeadlyEffect" ] To get a list of special-topic papers and current back issues of the ProLife News, send mail to the editor and ask for "v3Topics". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) Off-Line Resources Available *Group Organized to Facilitate Abortion Malpractice Cases* We at Columbia Law School are looking into possible _pro bono_ (doing legal work for free) opportunities in the pro-life scene. We came across this group, *Life Dynamics*, which is entirely devoted to facilitating abortion malpractice by providing plaintiff's lawyers with information about, among other things, abortion providers, especially any lawsuits that have been filed against them in the past. They seem like a very professional organization, and sent us a packet with an introductory ten-minute video and brochures. The president's name is Mark Crutcher, but you could also ask for Lisa Beaulieu, who sent us the packet. They can be reached at: Life Dynamics, Inc. Voice: (214) 436-3885 P.O. It is altogether fitting > that such a young country would host World Youth Day. America has > maintained its youth by always being able to change while holding fast > to its fundamental values: A determination to support family and work; > to the proposition that all children matter and we don't have a one to > waste; to the proposition that in every corner of the world, race or > creed should not deter any young boy or girl from growing up to the > fullest of their God-given capacities. (Applause.) I think this is very well put. It is very sad that someone capable of uttering such true sentiments does not put them in practice by preventing children from being legally murdered. Unfortunately, I really cannot get over my sadness - that someone supporting wholesale legal murder of children would write this! Really, I like these words. If I were to make a written plea for the life of the unborn, I think I would quote them, together with Jesse Jackson's impassioned plea against abortion (which he has since disowned.) Maybe someone else could write him a letter to this effect. His e-mail address is listed above. - Alex Pruss ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Month: "When an abortionist named David Gunn was murdered in Pensacola, Fla., one word was conspicuous by its absence in every news account I saw or read: _abortionist_. Gunn was called a _doctor_, a _physician_, and even an _abortion provider_, but the media carefully avoided the obvious word, the word that described his work best. That's odd. Other medical practicioners -- even the humble urologist -- like to be known for their specialties. Only the abortionist is an exception." - Joseph Sobran, syndicated columnist for UPI, 11 March, 1993 +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Credits: | | 1 - Translated by Rebecca Ryskind; the english appeared as Appendix D of | | the Spring 1993 issue of the _Human Life Review_ v.XIX, No.2.
