They describe the fundamentals of the Christian faith, at the level of children. Size 30k Shorter Catechism with Scripture proofs Original title: "The Shorter Catechism, agreed upon by The Assembly of Divines at Westminster, with the Assistance of Commissioners from the Church of Scotland, as a part of the covenanted uniformity in religion betwixt the churches of Christ in the kingdoms of Scotland, England, and Ireland. And approved Anno 1648, by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, to be a Directory for catechising such as are of weaker Capacity with references to the Proofs from the Scripture". The Ministers of Westminster left to posterity the most thoroughly thought-out statement ever penned of the elements of evangelical religion, and also one which breathes the finest flagrance of spiritual religion. Their most influential work, "The Shorter Catechism", was intended as a teaching basis for an introduction to the Christian Faith. Size 90k Owen, John, The Trinity and the Person and Satisfaction of Christ Full title: The Doctrine of the Trinity and of the Person and Satisfaction of Christ. Few of Owen's treatises have been more extensively circulated and generally useful than his "Brief Declaration and Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity," etc. It was published in 1669; and the author of the anonymous memoir of Owen, prefixed to an edition of his Sermons in 1720, informs us "This small piece has met with such an universal acceptance by true Christians of all denominations, that the seventh edition of it was lately published." Size 265k Rutherford, Samuel, Letters of Samuel Rutherford Edited by Andrew A. Bonar. C.H.Spurgeon testified: "What a wealth of spiritual ravishment we have here! Rutherford is beyond all praise of men. Like a strong-winged eagle he soars into the highest heaven and with unblenched eye he looks into the mystery of love divine.". The electronic version contains a selection from these letters. Size 245k Calvin, John, Selections from Commentary on the Minor Prophets Full title: Selections from Calvin's Commentary on the Minor Prophets. John Calvin was a man of God. He has been justly admired as the theologian of the Reformation; as the prince of commentators upon Holy Scripture, and the father of its scientific exegesis, and as the virtual founder of American common schools. He was also great in prayer. The system of Christian doctrine which bears his name has ever been the mother of devotion. It may be known by its fruits; for it has trained a noble army of martyrs, reformers, missionaries, and evangelists. It has inspired countless revivals of religion. It lives in all the popular hymnals of Christendom. Prayer is the "vital breath," the "native air" of Calvinism. The prayers of John Calvin, however, have received little attention, as compared with the fame which crowns his theological writings. His commentaries upon Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the minor prophets were originally delivered in the form of lectures, each followed by appropriate petitions. Both lectures and prayers were extemporaneous. In his epistle dedicatory, prefaced to the commentary upon the minor prophets, and addressed to the King of Sweden, Calvin says: "Had it been in my power I would rather have tried to prevent the wider circulation of that extemporaneous kind of teaching, intended for the particular benefit of my auditory, and with which benefit I was abundantly satisfied." John Budaeus, in another preface, piously exhorts that we pray for the Spirit of God, that we may come to the reading of Scripture instructed by him. "And for this end," he says, "much help may be given us by the short prayers which we have taken care to add at the close of every lecture as gathered by us with the same care and fidelity as the lectures were; and the ignorant may also have in these a pattern, as it were, painted before them, by which they may form their prayers from the words of Scripture. For as at the beginning of the lectures he ever used the same form of prayer, so he was wont ever to finish every lecture by a new prayer formed at the time, as given him by the Spirit of God, and accommodated to the subject of the lecture." Size 140k Compendium of the Christian Religion This booklet is an extract of the Heidelberg Catechism. It gives a short summary of the Christian Faith. Size 20k Confession of Faith The Confession of Faith, revised in the National Synod, held at Dordrecht, in the years 1618 and 1619. Size 73k Bunyan, John, The Pilgrim's Progress The Pilgrim's Progress is the story of a Christian on his way to heaven. Origin FTP kuyper.cs.pitt.edu/ebooks/HTML/calvin /prayer/prayer0.9.txt John Calvin, On the Christian Life From the Institutes of the Christian Religion, Bk. 3, chs. VIPX. Chapter i. The life of a christian man. Scriptural arguments exhorting to it. Chapter ii. A summary of the christian life. Of self-denial. Chapter iii. Of bearing the crossqone branch of self-denial. Chapter iv. Of meditating on the future life. Chapter v. How to use the present life, and the comforts of it. These chapters treat of the Life of the Christian, and are so arranged as to admit of being classed under two principal heads. First, it must be held to be an universally acknowledged point, that no man is a Christian who does not feel some special love for righteousness, chap. i. Secondly, in regard to the standard by which every man ought to regulate his life, although it seems to be considered in chap. ii. only, yet the three following chapters also refer to it. For it shows that the Christian has two duties to perform. First, the observance being so arduous, he needs the greatest patience. Hence chap. iii. treats professedly of the utility of the cross, and chap. iv. invites to meditation on the future life. Lastly, chap. v. clearly shows, as in no small degree conducive to this end, how we are to use this life and its comforts without abusing them. Size 105k Origin FTP kuyper.cs.pitt.edu /ebooks/HTML/calvin/christian_life/christian_life1.0.txt Augustine, Confessions and Enchiridion Augustine testified about his Confessions: My Confessions, in thirteen books, praise the righteous and good God as they speak either of my evil or good, and they are meant to excite men's minds and affections toward him. At least as far as I am concerned, this is what they did for me when they were being written and they still do this when read. What some people think of them is their own affair; but I do know that they have given pleasure to many of my brethren and still do so. The first through the tenth books were written about myself; the other three about Holy Scripture, from what is written there, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, even as far as the reference to the Sabbath rest. In Book IV, when I confessed my soul's misery over the death of a friend and said that our soul had somehow been made one out of two souls, "But it may have been that I was afraid to die, lest he should then die wholly whom I had so greatly loved"-- this now seems to be more a trivial declamation than a serious confession, although this inept expression may be tempered somewhat by the "may have been" which I added. And in Book XIII what I said -- "The firmament was made between the higher waters and the lower waters" -- was said without sufficient thought. In any case, the matter is very obscure. This work begins thus: "Great art thou, O Lord." The Enchiridion is a manual on Faith, Hope and Love. It contains the following chapters: The occasion and purpose of this "manual". The creed and the Lord's prayer as guides to the interpretation of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. God the Creator of all; and the goodness of all creation. The problem of evil. The kinds and degrees of error. The problem of lying. Disputed questions about the limits of knowledge and certainty in various matters. The plight of man after the fall. The replacement of the fallen angels by elect men. The necessity of grace. Jesus Christ the Mediator. The incarnation as prime example of the action of God's grace. The role of the Holy Spirit. Baptism and original sin. The mysteries of Christ's mediatorial work and justification. The Holy Spirit and the church. Problems about heavenly and earthly divisions of the church. Forgiveness of sins in the church. Faith and works. Almsgiving and forgiveness. Spiritual almsgiving. Problems of casuistry. The two causes of sin. The reality of the resurrection. The solution to present spiritual enigmas to be awaited in the life of the world to come. The triumph of God's sovereign good will. Limits of God's plan for human salvation. The destiny of man. The last things. The principles of christian living: faith and hope. Love. The end of all the law.
