Rules for Formatting Project Wittenberg Documents by Rev. Robert E. Smith Last Revision: November 1995 1. Use the following style for the header and footer of each document. An example of a header: _The Confession of Faith: Which Was Submitted to His Imperial Majesty Charles V At the Diet of Augsburg in the Year 1530_. by Philip Melanchthon, 1497-1560 German Text Edited by F. Bente and W. H. T. Dau Published in: _Triglot Concordia: The Symbolical Books of the Ev. Lutheran Church_. (St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1921), pp. 37 An example of a footer: _________________________________________________________________ This text was converted to ascii format for Project Wittenberg by Rev. Theodore Mayes and is in the public domain. You may freely distribute, copy or print this text. Please direct any comments or suggestions to: Rev. Robert E. Smith of the Walther Library at Concordia Theological Seminary. E-mail: smithre@mail.ctsfw.edu Surface Mail: 6600 N. Clinton St., Ft. Wayne, IN 46825 USA Phone: (260) 452-2123 Fax: (260) 452-2126 ________________________________________________________________ 2. Modify them as needed and attach to each file. Put your name in as the one who converted to ascii or translated it as is appropriate. Please remember that full and accurate citation is necessary to honor the spirit as well as the letter of the copyright law, to apply the Seventh Commandment to it and to give you proper credit for your hard work. 3. Keep files roughly between 13k and 50-75k. If it is larger than this, divide them at logical places, i.e., articles and sections. If there is no logical place, divide at a paragraph and give it a Pt. One and Pt. 2, etc. type designation. If you do divide the file, it would also be helpful to have a copy of the whole work in a single file as well. This is the form that Project Gutenberg prefers and they'll be happy to distribute copies of the more important pieces for us. 4. If your word processor allows it, set the margins to one inch on all sides. Set the font to some fixed font of 10 characters per inch. If you don't have that sort of control, Add eight spaces to the start of each line instead. Output them in plain ascii or text format. 5. Upload them and Email them to: smithre@mail.ctsfw.edu If you can use MIME attachment, please do. If not, sending in a normal email body is fine. If this is not possible, send me a copy on an IBM PC formatted disk. 6. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. Only one space should be used after punctuation to conserve disk space and bandwidth. 7. In most cases, Bob Smith will need to check on the work's copyright status before much is done. It would be a very big help, therefore, if you'd send him the full citation before you get too far in your conversion. 8. Convert footnotes to endnotes, inclosing the number in square brackets in both the text and the note. Example: Sihler volunteered to found a seminary in Ft. Wayne.[23] ______ [23]For a discussion of this see Robert E. Smith, "The First Fort Wayne Phase of the Practical Seminary," _Essays and Reports of the 1995 Conference on Archives and History_ (St. Louis: Concordia Historical Institute, 1997). 9. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop me an email note at smithre@mail.ctsfw.edu -------------------------------------------------- file: /pub/resources/text/wittenberg: 00styl-2.txt .
