The Cloud of Glory, or Shekainah, is a chief symbol of God's Holy Spirit. The people of Israel were lead by a pillar of cloud as they wandered in the desert after the Exodus. The cloud entered the tabernacle and Solomon's Temple. The cloud reminded the disciples that they were in the very presence of God Himself. Those in previous generations who entered God's presence unworthily died. Hence, their fear. This passage is the second instance in the Gospel where all three Persons of the Holy Trinity were manifest together in the form of the glorified Jesus, the Cloud and the Voice. The first occurance was at the Baptism of Jesus.
