Walking through life, there are times when we feel lost; moments that keep us awake at night. Often, even after pondering for a long time, it feels like we are getting nowhere near the correct answer. When everything doesn’t make sense, that is the time when prayer should be our refuge. It is a fact that no matter how hard we formulate and plan our lives, things will be out of hand sometimes. When these things happen, we should ask God for wisdom and guidance through prayer.

What Is A Wisdom Prayer?

1 Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Although the world has changed over time, we still long for wisdom deep inside; the wisdom that only God can give. A  prayer for wisdom is our request to God for the ability to gain the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment in every aspect of our lives. A prayer for wisdom can also help fathom our confusion, resolve troubles, and ease our minds. It is the best-prescribed meditation for Christians who seek answers about faith and life. This prayer for wisdom is the bridge that we can cross to ask God for advice. One of the best things about prayers is that it can also be used to call the Holy Spirit for guidance in life, and understanding things of faith.

What Is Divine Wisdom?

For a person to be in divine wisdom means that they live out God’s word. This is because the Word of God is the wisdom of God. However, God and His creations have different perspectives on how the world should be. Most of the time, we will only believe in what we can see, and we may settle for superficial things that will harm us later on. Our choices made without God will likely lead us to something unpleasant.

But, God is here to help us if we ask Him to grant us the gift of wisdom. He gave us the Bible as the ultimate guide of our faith and our lives. However, reading the Bible will not instantly solve our worries. To understand what God is trying to tell us through the Bible, we need to understand that God gives wisdom freely to His people when we ask for it. It is called the divine wisdom.

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Divine wisdom is the ability to perceive things past the limitation of knowledge and the physical world. It is the ability to see things from a wider perspective. Communicating with God requires more than just logic because the connection can only be established in our hearts.

How Do You Ask God For Wisdom and Discernment?

Praying For Guidance From God

Praying isn’t just about asking Him for something and having it in a blink of an eye. Talking to God should first start by casting all our doubts away. As our mind opens its portal to the things that can’t be seen by the naked eye, that’s when God can move freely in us. There are many instances in our lives where we need wisdom, and to get it, we only need to ask God as it’s written in the Book of James.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Praying For Wisdom

Making a prayer for wisdom is simple. Like any other type of prayer, it is communicating with God. You talk to Him privately and request for the gift you would like. However, this doesn’t mean that He will give it to you immediately. It may be given in time or immediately. However, there are some steps you should also take when you say your prayer for wisdom. Here are some steps that will help you in your prayer for wisdom.

Psalm 32:8-9  “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.”

Reading the Bible will help set our mood to praying

The Bible contains God’s words that He wants to convey to us and browsing through it will resonate in our soul to establish a heavenly connection.

Thank God first above everything else

Every prayer should start with appreciating God’s blessing and guidance that He continuously gives us. Gratitude to Him does not just please God but also affects our perception. Starting with counting the good things sets our hearts to receiving something good.

Self-reflecting on the things you did wrong opens your mind to divine wisdom

Contemplating on what mistakes you committed and asking for forgiveness from God cleanse our conscience and clears our vision on what we have to change in ourselves. Realizing that we are not perfect makes us understand that we need a perfect God with perfect wisdom on things.

Ask God for guidance and strength

Overcoming tribulations in life requires more than just knowing what to do. We need the willpower to do things that God had set us to fulfill. Tell God how badly you need Him and He’ll grant you both.

Solomon’s Prayer For Wisdom

King Solomon is a notable Bible figure known for his wisdom. Author of Ecclesiastes and third king of Israel, King Solomon searched for the meaning and purpose of life. When he became king, God gave him the opportunity to request for anything he desired. Instead of asking for wealth or anything from this world, he asked for wisdom so that he would be able to govern the nation of Israel. Because Solomon did not ask for riches, it showed the earnest humility of his heart. The Lord was pleased with Solomon’s request and gave him the gift of wisdom, stating that no one will have as much wisdom as Solomon had received. To this day, Solomon is known to be the wisest man of all time.

King Solomon’s prayer for wisdom is a good example for us when we pray for discernment and fair judgment. In 1 Kings, we can see King Solomon’s prayer. A prayer for wisdom that came from a pure heart, a heart for God.

King Solomon’s Prayer Went Like This:

1 Kings 3:6-9 Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.  And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”

Prayer For Guidance

Different directions in life

Knowing what is right and what is wrong is not enough to help us get by in life. Here’s an example of a prayer asking God for guidance in life:

“Our Father in heaven, I’m lifting all my praises and thanks to your holy name. For all the things you do for me every moment of my life, I thank You. I know I committed a lot of things that are against your will, but oh Lord, forgive me of my transgressions and sins to Your holy name. Help my heart to forgive the people who did me wrong as well. Lord, I need your hand to guide in this trying time of my life. In You, I entrust my worries and confusion. Guide my every step according to your will. This I ask in Jesus’s name, amen.”

Wisdom On What To Do

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

Knowledge is the facts, information, and skills you acquire through experience and education. It is a practical understanding of the things you encounter in life. On the other hand, wisdom is having the ability to think and act using your gained knowledge, experience, and understanding in your life. Divine wisdom can be applied in every aspect of life but it is most useful when we are not sure of what we should we do in a certain situation.

Light bulb, wisdom

In times of trouble and our mind seems to be blank, we need the wisdom of God to help us sort our thoughts and feelings. We can ask God for wisdom and signs through this prayer:

“God of heaven and earth, your wisdom and love surpass all the boundaries of this world. Thank you for another day that you gave your humble servant to live while praising Your name. Free my heart from anxiety and help me understand this situation I’m in through your wisdom, oh God. Give me the ability to fathom your unending love which will help me withstand all the trials that this life will give me. To You, I leave everything. Amen.”

Wisdom For Making Decisions

Psalm 25:4-5 “Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”

Making decisions is a hard thing to do. We spend a lot of time weighing things and considering factors to make up our minds. However, the best way to decide is to commit our thought to Him and let His love works in us. Relying upon our own understanding will bring us harm, while God’s guidance will deliver us from pain. This prayer can our guide:

“God Almighty, source of all wisdom and love: Help me get through this day by leaning on Your words. Give me the strength to hold on to your great plans. May You guide my every decision so I can fulfill the purpose of this hard time.  May the light of Your love shine on me to overcome the cloudiness of my mind at this moment. You are all I need, Father. Bless my heart to be a blessing to others no matter what situation I will be. Amen.”

Not Giving Up

Hope

Psalm 16:7-8 “I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

Life slaps us with never-ending challenges and the only choice we have is to accept the pain. However, we can find a way to survive each day through God’s grace and love. In times when everything is falling apart, let God help you carry your burdens and handle your problems. He cares for us. All we need to do is ask and He will give what’s best for us.

Colossians 1:9-12 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Using God’s Given Knowledge And Wisdom

Knowing what to do and knowing how to do it are 2 different things. This is the same as acquiring knowledge and having wisdom. As we go through the different stages of life, we obtain experiences and information about how things work. But comprehending things solely by our knowledge is not a good choice. We will always need the guidance of someone above life itself; someone who knows how many stars are there in the universe because He is the one who placed it there.

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

When we pray for God’s guidance through the Holy Spirit, we can be assured that God will give us wisdom. He knows the answer to every question and will grant us the wisdom we need to solve our problems. So, when you wake each day, don’t rush to face your day without going before God to seek guidance.
