Facts About The Bible
The Bible is the foundation of Christianity and Christians consider this book a sacred text. But its contents are not exclusive for believers alone. Throughout the centuries, the Bible fascinated all groups of readers— including non-believers. And even today, it remains the most popular book in the world. This book undoubtedly unveils facts that tell us the realities regarding faith, life, and the universe. Additionally, even though the Bible has been studied from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, there is always something new to learn; verses analyzed in a different view from what we have learned from our spiritual leaders. Although most people are familiar with the Bible, even some Christians are not aware of the amazing facts it contains. Below, we listed some facts about the Bible that will surely entertain, educate, and strengthen your faith.
The etymology of the word “Bible”
Derived from the Greek word “Ta Biblia”, which means “the books” or “the scrolls”, the term “Bible” was used by Christians since c.223 CE. Hellenistic Jews often used the term “Ta Biblia” to refer to their sacred books. Whilst the term “Holy Bible” came from the medieval Latin word “Biblia sacra” which directly translates as “holy book”.
Bible as the most-sold book
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Bible has remained the most-sold and widely distributed book of all time. With over 100 million copies sold each year, it remains the top-selling non-fiction book in the world. As of today, more than 5 billion copies have been sold worldwide.
The most stolen book in the world
Though one of God’s first 10 commandments is “thou shall not steal”, many people seem to have missed this commandment for the Bible is not only the best-selling book in the world but it is also deemed as the most stolen book in the world. It is amusing how people break God’s commandment by stealing the book that holds this commandment. As copies of the Bible are almost present anywhere, people tend to just take it. This is also because many feel that God’s word should be free for all, so they steal a Bible for themselves or to give others.
Translations of the Bible
The full Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testament books, has been translated to 532 languages. This then makes it accessible to everyone around the world. Additionally, partial translations in 2,883 languages have also been made.
Sinners Bible
In 1631, a publishing company accidentally made a printing error. The word “not” was omitted from the 7th commandment “thou shall not commit adultery”. This version has 9 existing copies left and has become a collector’s item.
The Authors of the Bible
It has long been known that the authors of the Bible came from different groups of people; kings, slaves, fishermen, shepherds, teachers, and even murderers. Some knew each other, particularly those who lived during the time when Jesus was ministering on earth. However, it is clear that most of these authors didn’t know each other nor had the chance to meet. But amazingly, their words do not contradict each other, not even once. And though many authors didn’t meet, many of their stories flow in chronological order!
Shortest and Longest Chapter of the Bible
Both the shortest and the longest chapter in the whole Bible can be found in the Book of Psalms. Containing only 2 verses, Psalm 117 is the shortest while Psalm 119 is the longest.
Information about Jesus
Jesus had been mentioned since the Old Testament through prophecies. And these prophecies were fulfilled in the New Testament. Jesus’s birth and ministry were foretold. Hence, there was no doubt that Jesus is the Saviour that God sent to earth. But despite the information about him in both the New and Old Testaments, there is information about him that many still believe to be true but are not mentioned in the Bible. This includes his physical appearance and his date of birth.
Jesus was not an only child
Contrary to the common misconception, Mary and Joseph had children after Jesus. He had brothers and sisters who were mentioned in the Gospels (Mark 6:3 and Matthew 13:55 -56).
Mahershalalhashbaz
Prophet Isaiah named his second son “Mahershalalhashbaz”. It means “swift is the spoils, speedy is the plunder”. This name that was mentioned in Isaiah 8:3 is the longest word that can be found in the Bible.
The Completion of the 2 Books
According to Biblical scholars, it took at least a thousand years to complete the Old Testament of the Bible. While the New Testament took only 50-75 years to be completed.
Biggest Religions of the World
Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, known as the 3 biggest religions in the world, have one thing in common. These three have the Bible as the basis of their faith. Islam and Judaism both believe in the Old Testament and use it as the basis of their Holy Books the Torah and the Quran. Christians however, have the New Testament that declares Jesus as the Messiah foretold from the Old Testament.
The First English Bible
In the past, the Catholic church believed that translating the Bible from Latin to English would create misinterpretations. However, there are some who suggest that the Catholic Church attempted to keep the Bible exclusively understood by a few people so as to allow the continuation of exploitations and abuse carried out by some church officials. So when William Tyndale produced the first printed edited version of the New Testament in the 14th century, he was charged with committing heresy and burned until death as a punishment.
John Wycliffe
William Tyndale was not the first person who suffered the fate of being burned. An English philosopher named John Wycliffe wrote the first translation of the entire Bible from Latin Vulgate to English letters. The Catholic church did not take it well and ordered for his corpse to be burned after he died— a punishment that was commonly done to witches and criminals.
Books inside the Bible
The Bible is a compilation of 66 books—39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. If you are wondering why certain books have a first and second part, it is because it was too long to fit into one scroll. Hence, they broke it down into two parts. Examples of this are the Book of Kings, Samuel, and John. The books inside the Bible can be classified into five groups; historical, prophetic, poetic, gospels, and epistles.

Poetic Books
The five poetic books in the Bible are the most debated books in the Bible. Their meaning, purpose, and interpretations have always been the subject of debates of Biblical scholars. The fact that the poetic books used Hebrew poetry to tackle wisdom, life, love, and faith makes it extremely hard to decode. These books have several things in common. They use the repetition of words and phrases through patterns and rhythms. These five books also give us a glimpse of God’s nature.
- Job
- Psalms
- Proverbs
- Ecclesiastes
- Song of Solomon
Gospel Books
“Gospel” came from the old English word “godspel” which means “good news”. The 4 Gospel books reveal the core foundation of Christianity. These books also contain the life and preachings of Jesus Christ. So, it is safe to say that these books are the highlight of the New Testament.
- Matthew
- Mark
- Luke
- John
Epistles
From the Greek word “epistole”, the word epistle means a letter or written message. Among the other books in the Bible, it is easier to identify epistle books as they follow a certain template. The Biggest And Smallest Bibles In The world
Measuring only 20 nanometers, the world’s smallest Bible can easily fit on the tip of a ballpoint pen. This Bible is named as the “Nano Bible“. In contrast, Louis Waynai’s Bible is deemed as the world’s largest Bible. It weighs 496 kilograms and stands at 43.5 inches tall and 98 inches wide when laid open. Louis Waynai, who’s name is adopted as the Bible’s name, spent approximately 8,000 hours in 1930 to make this huge Bible. This amazing Bible replicates the King James Version.
Terminologies in the Bible
The Bible is almost accessible to everyone and has been translated into different languages to be understood by all people. But until now, people still believe in terminologies that are not even a bit Biblical. These famous terminologies have been used for a long time. So much so that they are hard to eradicate. Some examples of this are “trinity”, “Christmas”, and even the word “Catholic”.
Paul’s Contribution to the Bible and Christianity
The Bible has various authors. But among them, it is Apostle Paul who has contributed the most information and facts about the Bible to the world. Besides being the most famous apostle in the first-century church, Paul also made an impact as a writer. Interestingly, of the 27 New Testament Books, he wrote 14 of them. As a preacher in the first century, he introduced the word of God to the multitudes. Converting the gentiles to Christians, he was also known as an apostle to the gentiles.
Scientific Facts About The Bible
The Bible has been accused of being a fictional and mythical book by non-believers. They describe it as a book written without any basis nor credibility. But all of these accusations are far from the truth. Scripture, though written before any scientific discoveries and breakthroughs, contains information that can be proven by Science.
Additionally, it is also incredible to note that most authors of the Bible were not highly-educated. The fact is, most of them were shepherds and fishermen, not scholars. The truths that were declared in the Bible 2000 years ago are still irrefutable in the age of modern science. These facts do not just prove how credible and scientific the Bible is, but it also confirms the fact that the wisdom in the Bible comes from a greater being with the knowledge of everything that exists.
To prove this point, watch the video below.
The video above clearly explains how Science confirms how the Bible is historically true. It shows how scientific and credible the Bible is more than any books out there.
The Shape of the Earth
The Hebrew word used was “khoog”, which means something circular or arched. In ancient times, many believed that the earth has an edge or was flat. However, that theory has been proven wrong because men have discovered proofs that state otherwise. An example of this would be the images of our planet seen through satellites. But this is not a breakthrough in modern science. Instead, it is just a validation of what is written in Isaiah 40:22, that the earth is circular. And contrary to the belief that Aristotle was the scientist who figured the earth was round, this truth was actually declared long before his theory. Also, until today, no one can contest it.
Earth is Floating in Space
Another amazing scientific fact that was declared in the Bible was that the earth is floating in space. Contrary to ancient beliefs that earth is carried by animals such as turtles and elephants or even by the demigod Hercules and the Titan Atlas, the earth hangs on nothing. as stated in Job 26:7, the earth hangs on nothing; not tied nor carried.
The Rotation of the Earth
As said, the Bible is the most debated book in human history. So we can only conclude that it is also the most misunderstood book. Both Christians and non-Christians have arguments about its contents. Wrong interpretations of the Bible can be affected by personal biases that lead to misconceptions believed by the early churches.
One of these beliefs was heliocentrism. They strongly believed that the earth is the center of the solar system and the other heavenly bodies revolve around it. With this comes the belief that the earth is still and the sun and the moon move. However, the Bible had indicated in Job 38:12-14 that the earth rotates and it causes the day and night. The misconceptions that were created by the early Catholic church have been attributed to prove how superstitious the Bible is, when in fact, it is not.
Light can Manifest into Speech
Back in 1500 BC, the Book of Job recorded a seemingly strange question to Job. He asked Job if he can send forth flashes of lightning and they will say “here we are”. Although it can be interpreted as a metaphorical statement, modern science proved that light can manifest into speech. It explains why we can hear the voice of anyone from all over the world and talk to them live.
The Weight of Air
Without modern science, it is impossible to believe the claim in Job 28:25; the air has weight. In the next verses, we can read the statement that the fear of the Lord is wisdom. And it is indeed true. Though the air is invisible, it has mass and it takes up space. Therefore, it is proven that it has weight. According to studies, the air inside a room can weigh at least 600 kilograms and can increase depending on the wetness of it.
Facts about the Bible and Fingerprints
Using fingerprints as a way to determine the real suspect in a criminal case did not begin until 1892. When Juan Vucetich used the fingerprint of Francisca Rojas to convict her of murdering her two sons. The woman attempted to hide er crime by cutting her own throat to place the blame on others. But her fingerprint betrayed her. Before this incident, in 1858, the first usage of fingerprints was recorded in India as a form of identification. However, before these discoveries, the Bible had already mentioned the use of fingerprints.
In Job 37:7, it says that God sealed the hand of every man. And no one can refute this as no two people in the world have alike fingerprints. Because God individually sealed our hands. So each handprint and fingerprint is unique.
Best Dimension for a Ship
The Book of Genesis tells us the famous story of Noah’s ark. God’s commandment to Noah was written in detail. It included the size and dimensions of the ark that God commanded Noah to build. In 1993 KRISO, a world-class South Korean ship research center, conducted an experiment comparing 12 ships. Looking for the best shape and size to create a ship, each ship was designed with different dimensions (Genesis 6:14–16). The experiment proved that no other model can outperform the model indicated in the Bible. Written long before this experiment or any studies about ships was made, the Biblical model proved its worth.
Today, most ships are still modeled according to Noah’s ark dimensions but have some differences. This is because of modern facilities and functions such as materials and mechanisms.
Bible and Oceanography
Matthew Fontaine Maury had full confidence in the Bible. He believed that if God said that there are paths in the sea, then he can find it (Psalm 8:8 ). This belief led him into discovering the warm and cold continental currents.
Springs Under the Ocean
In Job 38:16, the Bible mentions springs under the ocean. Thousands of years later, scientists discovered that there are springs under the water and they called it vents. Others argue that the Book of Job was poetic and should not be taken literally. But even poetic statements are based on real things in the physical world and it couldn’t be stated out of anything.
Roots of the Mountains
Before the invention of submarines, no one could see the bottom of the ocean or make it out alive to tell the tale. The story of Jonah and how he ran away from God only to be swallowed by a big fish was regarded by some as a legend. However, when he recalled and wrote down his experience, no man can refute his statement that there are roots of mountains under the sea (Jonah 2). In addition to this, the mountains that had always been under the ocean was discovered and proved to be true by scientists.
The Power of Washing Under the Running Water
In the field of medicine, using running water to wash wounds and other parts of the body is essential and strictly followed. In the past, washing one’s hands was not a common practice as microscopic diseases were yet to be discovered. And according to Encyclopedia Britannica, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis who was a physician, scientist, and early pioneer of antiseptic procedures was troubled about the high death rate of mothers who gave birth. Semmelweis took note of this practice and insisted that doctors should wash their hands. And when they started washing their hands in a basin of water, death rates noticeably decreased.
However, this shouldn’t have been new information. The Bible instructed the Hebrew nation 3000 years ago on how to deal with diseases— to wash it with running water. This method that was taught in Leviticus 15:13 is still used and proven to the best practices up to this day.
The life of the flesh is blood
More than a hundred years ago, people believed that diseases were caused by contamination in the blood that entered a persons’ body. And because of this belief, people were bled to death as a method of curing their sickness. One of the victims of this practice was the first president of the United States, George Washington, who was literally bled to death. After countless studies and experiments, this belief was debunked, Today, instead of shedding blood, we replenish it. And it does not end with that.
Blood is also used to determine the condition of our body. By examining the blood, the overall health of the body can be evaluated. For the life of the flesh is the blood as said in Leviticus 17:11. If this verse was known and used back then, blood-shedding will not cross the mind of anyone.
Facts About the Bible Teaches Us About Quarantine
The most used word in 2020 is probably “quarantine”. Although the word “quarantine” was coined and first used around the 14-15th century or the middle ages, the Bible has taught the importance of isolating sick patients long before science discovered its essence. In Leviticus 13:46, it says that someone with leprosy should be alone on the days that he is unclean and he should be living outside the camp. Nowadays, separating the sick from the healthy is a common practice recommended by medical science but the human race had to learn it the hard way citing the black plague as an example.
Archeological Artifacts That support Facts About The Bible
Some consider the Bible as a good book of literature. With heroes and moral lessons, biblical stories have a great resemblance to common myths and legends. However, unlike these fictional stories, science and history can prove the authenticity of the Bible. Some accounts in the Bible were once doubted because of the lack of historical accounts and archeological artifacts that will validate these claims. Ironically, these archeological facts that were used against the Holy Scripture are now the strongest evidence to ensure and guarantee that what is written inside the Book of Life is undoubtedly true.
Tel Dan Stele
The Biblical account about Israel’s history has been greatly doubted by historians and enthusiasts of the same field. It is not because it contradicts the available written accounts about the history of Israel, but because some people and events were stated in the Bible that was not in any historical record available. Coincidentally, one of these records is the existence of David. Some believe that David was just another fictional or legendary character that the Bible created. However, when the Tel Dan Stele was found, some inscriptions caught the eye of the researchers and the translators. It was the mention of a certain individual that killed Joram, who was described as the son of the king of Israel and the House of David.
These writings scattered the beliefs of those who doubted the existence of David and the credibility of the historical accounts inside it. Moreover, the writings on the Tel Dan Stele was Aramaic. Although not yet confirmed, it is highly probable that the stele was erected by an Aramaean king mentioned in the Second Book of Kings named Hazael. Based on the same book, Hazael conquered Israel except for the city of Jerusalem. The origin of the tablet can only point to an Aramean king, whose language was Aramaic.
Pilate’s Stone
Like most Biblical characters, the existence of Pontius Pilate, the man who sentenced Jesus to die on the cross, was also doubted. Although he was mentioned in several historical accounts of some Roman historians, Jewish historian Josephus, and a writer named Philo, it still doubted his existence.
Suspicions about Pilate’s existence casts doubt on the existence of the resurrected Messiah. Until one day, at the archaeological site of Caesarea Maritima in 1961, a damaged block was found. This archeological artifact contains a 1st-century Roman inscription that bears the name of “Pontius Pilatus” and his position ad the prefect of Judea in the Reign of Tiberius Augustus. This piece of stone is one of the interesting facts about the Bible that is incontestible. Also, the stone was declared as genuine and authentic in response to those who doubted that it was forged.
King Sargon of Assyria
A king with the name King Sargon was once mentioned in the Book of Isaiah. This great king was not mentioned in any historical accounts or records. There were no existing personal documents that had survived from his reign. Thus, no one ever believed that he existed. However, a series of omens and clay tablets have been excavated, and they do give in depth information about the unknown king. These artifacts then give proof of his existence and greatness and at the same time. With these historical items, we have proof that the Bible was right all along.
Mesha Stele
The Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite stone, is an inscribed stone found in Dhiban, Jordan. This stele contains stories that agree with the facts mentioned in the Bible about some historical events. The inscriptions bear the narrative about the political relationship between Moab and Israel. Additionally, it also mentions the name of the Hebrew God in the Bible called “YHWH”. The stone can also be regarded as a witness of the existence of the Biblical figure, David, as it mentioned about the House of David like the Ten Dal Stele.
Amphipolis and Apollonia
The Bible also mentions two cities, Amphipolis and Apollonia. These places are said to have been a stopover for travelers throughout history. In Acts 17:1, Paul passed by these places before getting to Thessalonica. The proper place of these places is exactly what was stated in the Bible as confirmed by archeologists and historians.
Confirmed Facts in the Book of Acts
Not only is the Bible historically accurate, but its account, especially those that are in the New Testament have been discovered to be true facts confirmed by various historians through detailed studies and records that were found. The Book of Acts and the details about Paul’s missionary work inside it have been confirmed by historians and archeologists.
Facts about the bible include:
- The synagogue in Thessalonica
- It stated the proper way to address the magistrates as “politarches”
- Statement of how to get to Athens the best way possible, through sailing, because of the east winds favoring sailing in the summer
- An abundance of idols/images that people worship in Athens
- The fact that debating was a common scene at the marketplace in Athens
- “Areopagites” as the correct title for someone who was a member of the court
The things listed above are found only in the Book of Acts. These facts about the Bible shows that the writers of the Gospel write with enough knowledge and immersion to the subject they talked about. It was not just some information that was weaved together to create an unbelievable narrative. Moreover, no historian or any ancient texts had proven the Bible wrong.
Facts About Jesus
One of the biggest questions related to the facts about the Bible and Christianity is the existence of Jesus. Was there really a certain Jesus who became famous for being the said Messiah? Are there any pieces of evidence outside the Bible that proves it? Or is He just a Bible character made out of the imaginations of its writers? Although the Bible has proven itself as credible evidence of historical events, some still can not believe it. However, through the years, archeology did not just prove the existence of Jesus. Compare to King Arthur, whose existence was rarely questioned (only some supernatural things that were included in his account), records about Jesus is not only in myths or legends or the Bible. Researches confirmed that 50 people in the Bible were guaranteed to be real.
Below, we listed down some non-Biblical texts that proved that Jesus existed.
Annals by Tacitus
Tacitus was a Roman senator who was deemed as the best among the Roman historians. As a Roman, Tacitus despised Christians. But on his work titled “Annals”, he included Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus’ biography. In 64 C.E, Emperor Nero was suspected to have started the Great Fire of Rome to make a place for his desired building project. Eager to escape the charges of arson, he blamed the fire on the Christians. He also confirmed the Biblical account of how Jesus was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate under the reign of Tiberius.
The Jewish Antiquities/ Testimonium Flavianum
Josephus Flavius was a Jewish author who wrote the 2 books called “The Jewish Antiquities” and “The Jewish War”. Flavius was once a commander in Galilee although he ended up living in the Roman empire after becoming a prisoner of war. Since then, he lived under the protection of the Flavians and adopted the Roman surname “Flavius”. Most Jews considered him as a traitor but his works say otherwise. He was dedicated to writing down Jewish cultures and wars that the Jewish people fought. In his book, “The Jewish Antiquities”, Flavius mentioned Jesus as the one who was called the Messiah, intending to describe his “brother” James. The death of James resulted in Ananus losing his position as a high priest.
The brief mention of Jesus implies that Flavius did not want to emphasize nor acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. He used Jesus to specifically identify James, whose name was very common in that era. Therefore this proves the fact that the existence of Jesus was a common fact without any doubt.
The Passing Peregrinus
There were only a few documents from the ancient era that still exists today. Yet we can notice that no ancient historian argued about the existence of Jesus. Some people like the Greek satirist Lucian of Samosata who opposed Christianity simply opposed the claim of Jesus’ Godliness.
Although he did not directly name Jesus, Lucian’s description of someone who promised to give immortal life and was crucified in Palestine fits Christ. He added that this leader formed a new cult that Jews and Christians deeply believed and worshiped. Lucian also expressed a sarcastic remark of how Jesus “convinced” these people to be brothers and to deny Greek gods, noting how he despised Christianity. Ironically, his strong opposition to Christianity has now become one of the clearest proof about the existence of Jesus.
Other Accounts About Jesus
Many writings that were written about Christianity and Jesus were considered to be blasphemous. One of these was from a platonist philosopher named Celsus who regarded Jesus as a magician with unrealistic claims. Suetonius, a historian, writer, and lawyer, also wrote about how people revered Jesus like a God.
Facts About The Bible And Its Contents
Though full of supernatural happenings, the Bible is still categorized under the non-fiction section of books. Its contents are not just unique, it also stands out among other literary works. Unlike other legends and myths, the Bible does not whitewash or justify the shortcomings of its heroes. Their flaws and regrets were all included and were judged under the moral standard of the book. And if understood well, we can see that all the writers did not once oppose the theme of the whole book as they are always guided by a divine hand. As Christians, we can always stand firm to our belief that the Bible is indeed true, irrefutable, and made according to God’s word.
Isaiah 46:9-10 For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
Without other pieces of evidence, the Bible can defend itself by proving the truthfulness of its words. The verse above is a strong declaration and a challenge that no one will dare say without complete confidence. Indeed the Bible tells us about true historical facts and it never fails to its prophecies since the beginning till now, even its prophecy. We can read the prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament that were accurately fulfilled in the New Testament. Some of these are the birth of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), Jesus’s birthplace (Micah 5:2), the betrayal for some pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12), and many more.
The Fulfillment of Prophecies
No human being can accurately predict the future may it be through a claimed superpowers or any scientific method. Yet the Bible is at least 27% prophetic and not even one failed as of yet and never will. We can read in the Book of Daniel the series of dreams that Daniel dreamed and dreams that he interpreted. One of these was the division of Alexander the Great’s empire (Daniel 8) fulfilled 2 centuries after the death of Daniel. Although Daniel was a statesman and of high knowledge, it would be impossible to predict that the Persians would be defeated by the Greeks. Similar to the division of Alexander’s Empire, Daniel predicted that a small city-state like Rome would be able to dominate a big region including the whole Mediterranean and other near cities. And his writings were made before Rome existed.
Some skeptics argued that these said prophecies were written after these events happened and disguise it as a prophecy. However, it was easily debunked by the account of Josephus Flavius in “The Antiquities of the Jews” which implies how Jews regarded Daniel’s prediction as a sacred text, proving its existence before its fulfillment. The fulfillment of these prophecies in great accuracy just solidifies the fact that it was not written merely by man’s knowledge. It is by the wisdom of an all-powerful God who knows all things that happened and things that will come to happen.
