  • Psalm 104:30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

If we are to put it into an analogy, the Holy Spirit is like God’s hand and feet. It is the force behind God’s power and it is directly God’s power. And just like how our hands and feet function according to our desires, the Holy Spirit moves for and through the will of God. That is the reason why it has no limit. It can go through anywhere and anything, even inside the unfathomable minds of humans. In other words, the Holy Spirit is an invisible yet active force with works that are visible and divine.

If we listen, the Holy Spirit speaks to us through the Bible, which is why it’s important to read the Bible daily. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what we read and teaches us how to live a God-honoring life. Christians need to rely on the Holy Spirit daily through Jesus’ teachings. Though it may be hard, we need to listen to the convictions of the Holy Spirit for it keeps us from making bad decisions. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Hand receiving the Holy Spirit

What are the 15 characteristics of the Holy Spirit?

God has dominion over everything. The power of His Holy Spirit can move through everything. We must get to know how the active force of God works. Hence, we listed down some characteristics and attributes of the Holy Spirit below. For further reading, it is highly recommended that the verses accompanying these characteristics be read with its preceding and succeeding verses in the Bible.

1. Convicts us of sin

  • John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment

God’s judgment is fair and righteous. Having the Holy Spirit walk beside us does not mean that we will not sin. But the Spirit guards our way and grants us the wisdom to avoid sin. When we sin, it immediately convicts us. It makes us aware of what we did wrong so that we will immediately repent and confess our transgressions. In that way, we will receive forgiveness from Him.

2. It dwells in us

  • John 14:15-17 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The moment we become enlightened by the teachings of the Bible and when we follow it, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us. Through it, we overcome the trials in life with peace and wisdom. Although it can not be seen by the naked eye, the Holy Spirit can be felt in every aspect of our lives. It leads us to the road that God wants us to walk on and help us resist temptations that are not pleasing in the eyes of Our Father.

3. Seals us

  • Ephesians 1:13  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit

Following the words of God will make us live our life better than those who don’t. Aside from that, we became sealed by the Holy Spit. This means that the power of God envelops us to protect us, enlighten us, and guide us. And most importantly, it also gives us the most important gift, salvation.

4. Teaches us things of faith

  • John 14:26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

The Bible has been translated into different languages all over the world. And because of that, almost everyone has access to read it. But not everyone can understand it and be enlightened by it. What may be right in the eyes of man, may not be acceptable in the reasoning of the Bible.   To decode the Bible, divine wisdom from the Holy Spirit is needed. It guides us to do the right thing and to the things in line with our faith.

Bible verses about the Holy Spirit

5. Guides us into all truth

  • John 16:13  When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Many truths are declared in the world. Yet, no one can beat the truth revealed in the Bible. It is timeless and always correct. For that truth to be revealed to us, we need the Holy Spirit to open our minds and grants us the understanding of the Word of God.

6. Reminds us of God’s word

  • John 14:26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

As humans, we sometimes tend to forget what was taught to us. And because we get bombarded by a lot of things in life, we get a little out of the path that God made us walk into. In times like this, the Holy Spirit will remind us what we need to do and what God wants us to do. It may be Bible verses that we “coincidentally” see or someone accidentally sends. One thing is for sure, the Holy Spirit guides us in every aspect of our life and lead us back to God every time we go astray.

7. Bears fruit through us

  • Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

All the good things are from God. The fruits of His Spirit manifest in every aspect of the life of someone who accepted it. When the Holy Spirit starts to dwell on somebody, he/she becomes a changed person. The Holy Spirit changes his/her way of thinking, prolongs his/her patience, and fills his/her heart with compassion and kindness. With all these changes, he/she becomes the mirror of God’s love for others.

8. Comforts us

  • John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you

Life is tough, especially these days when the end is near. That explains the growing number of suicide and depression all over the world. When life rolls out of control, we can not help but panic and be anxious. We fall in the trap of our mind through overthinking and mindless worrying. Together, with the vast understanding that was given to us, the Holy Spirit also comforts us. In times of trouble, we can still have peace of mind through Him (John 14:27).

9. Equips us with spiritual gifts

  • 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and here are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Spiritual gifts are from God alone. It is given by the Holy Spirit that manifests in the way of thinking and deeds of the person who received it. The Holy Spirit grants peace of mind despite troubles, relieve our spiritual fatigue, and helps us see the good in any situation. These spiritual gifts serve as our armor as we go through the journey of life. It will help us hold on to our faith and be the people Our Father wants us to be.

10. Fills us

  • Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

When someone is drunk, their actions and judgment are clouded by the alcohol consumed. They are then considered not to be in the right state of mind not because they want to, but because they’re drunk. The same thing happens when we become filled with the Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to manifest its fruit in every aspect of our life. We do not control our lives anymore. It means that we fully submit ourselves to God and His will.

11. Empowers us

  • Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

With God everything is possible. Holding unto His words and promises, we gain confidence and hope. Our awareness of the Holy Spirit that dwells inside of us empowers us. It makes us free from worries as we know that the spirit of God is guiding our every step. And when hardships come, we do not lose hope. Instead, we just do the things in our power and let God handle those that are not.

12. Gives us wisdom and discernment

  • Ephesians 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him

God’s wisdom is can not be compared to the vastness of the oceans. It is as unfathomable and unperceivable as the universe. This kind of wisdom is impossible for us. Hence, the limitations of our knowledge should be guided by the wisdom of God. The divine wisdom from the Holy Spirit keeps us free from instability and vacillation. Through the Holy Ghost, we learn how to use our Biblical knowledge in real life.

13. Grants us the power of love and self-control

  • 2 Timothy 1:7  for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

The Holy Spirit is the agent of Our Father that enables us to love genuinely. It also gives the power of self-control for us to avoid the temptations of sin. Rather, we do things based on the will of God. It transforms us to be the people of God that we are supposed to become.

14. Helps us in times of trouble

  • Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Receiving the Holy Spirit does not mean that we will be free from trials and sufferings. This world is full of agony and unfortunate things. Though we may not be spared from it, rest assured that we have a Helper in the form of the Holy Spirit. It may not give us the exact answer to our problems sometimes but it will give us the strength to overcome it. As it dwells on us, our prayers will always be heard and our hearts comforted by it as well.

15. Strengthens us

  • Ephesians 3:16 That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being

Our strength alone is not enough to get through this chaotic world. Without the strength of the Holy Spirit, we will be one with the millions of people who are restless and unpeaceful. Walking in Spirit means we are not relying on our strength anymore. Rather than trying to change things that we have no power of, we lean on the belief that the Spirit will help us accomplish things that we are meant to do.

water, cross

  • Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Having the Holy Spirit is the same as having God dwell in us. As what was declared in the New Testament, we are the temple of God. Hence, God should dwell in us in the form of the Holy Spirit. Because a temple without the Spirit is useless and empty. So how can we call the Body of the Holy Spirit? How can we receive it? The answers lie in the Bible. The first step is the awareness that we are sinners. Those sins made us worthy of hell and forever doomed. We should repent and be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The moment we get out if the water of baptism, we take part in Jesus’s sacrifice. We receive the Holy Spirit that will guide us to the way of salvation. However, receiving the Holy Spirit is not the end. Faith is needed for the Spirit to be able to work through us. And faith without works is dead. Hence, we should follow the commandments of the Bible together with the dictations of the Spirit that we received.
